FESTIVALS

In the late 1960s, rock festivals were gaining in popularity. From 1967 onward, the rock festival was regarded as the ideal context in which to hear rock music, and thousands of fans attended.

Monterey Pop Festival was the first major rock festival in the world and became the model for future festivals. But the two music festivals that revealed the highs and lows of the rock and roll subculture were Woodstock (August 1969) and Altamont (December 1969).
